According to the 2000 Census, over 92,000 grandparents were responsible for raising their grandchildren in the state of Georgia. The Department of Human Resources (DHR) is reaching out to grandparents raising grandchildren by providing more access to resources through all of its services/programs. The Northwest Georgia Area Agency on Aging also realizes that many other children are being raised by relatives or caregivers other than parents or grandparents. The Kinship Care program seeks to assist all non-parent caregivers with resources, programs and services to meet the specific needs of these caregivers. Mercy Senior Care hosts monthly support groups in Rome and Summerville. For information about the support groups or other services in Northwest Georgia, e-mail Claire Mangraviti (click the name to send an e-mail) or give her a call at 706-291-8496.
