It's All Relatives

According to the 2000 Census, over 92,000 grandparents were responsible for raising their grandchildren in the state of Georgia. The Department of Human Resources (DHR) is reaching out to grandparents raising grandchildren by providing more access to resources through all of its services/programs. The Northwest Georgia Area Agency on Aging also realizes that many other children are being raised by relatives or caregivers other than parents or grandparents. The Kinship Care program seeks to assist all non-parent caregivers with resources, programs and services to meet the specific needs of these caregivers.

Mercy Senior Care hosts monthly support groups in Rome and Summerville. For information about the support groups or other services in Northwest Georgia, e-mail Julia Kimple (click the name to send an e-mail) or give her a call at 706-291-8496.

Upcoming Events for Kinship Care:

The Caregiver Support Group of Rome meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month (except July and December) at Mercy Senior Care at 12:00 PM. Contact Elizabeth Molina at 706-291-8496 for more information.

Grands Who Care/Relatives As Caregivers Support Group meets at the Floyd County Health Department in Rome on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10:00 AM. Contact Julia Kimple at 706-291-8496 for more information.

Grands Who Care/Relatives As Caregivers Support Group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at Summerville Middle School in Chattooga County at 8:30 AM. Contact Julia Kimple at 706-291-8496 for more information.
