Elder Rights and Elder Abuse Prevention SCAM ALERT: This was reported to us via the NAIC Attorney Bulletin Board attorneysbb@extlist.naic.org by the Colorado Division of Insurance. The scam consists of an unsolicited phone call to a beneficiary from a party claiming to be from Medicare, notifying the beneficiary that they owe a "Part D Penalty" (presumably a late enrollment penalty), and that it needs to be paid immediately. From there, the caller presumably requests banking and/or credit card information for payment (the note on the bulletin board does not specify this, but it's a logical inference).
The focus of the Area Agency on Aging's Elder Rights Council is to educate and work with human service agencies, law enforcement personnel, and various other professional entities, to increase the level of community awareness of fraud and abuse. Upcoming meetings are noted on our Meetings page. We hope you'll plan to join us. Minutes for our past meetings will be posted here on this page for the convenience of those who are not able to attend the meetings in person. We also frequently send e-mail notices regarding elder abuse cases in the news and alerts regarding fraud and scams that target the elderly population. If you'd like to receive e-mail updates regarding Elder Rights and Elder Abuse Prevention activities, please Kerry DeFoe by phone at 706-295-6485 or 1-800-759-2963.
